This time we worked on preparing our own home for sale. My husband was recently stationed in Washington D.C. and after 12 wonderful years in Colorado Springs our family packed up and prepared to move across the country to start over out East. Our home presented very well with a record amount of showings for our seasoned Realtor, with multiple offers the first weekend. We closed quickly and made our journey out to West Virginia where we plan to plant some roots for now. We are under contract with a beautiful Colonial brick home on 3 acres and are looking forward to closing in November. It feels like we are flying on a wing and a prayer through this whirlwind of change right now. Our kids are grappling with all of the changes and the differences in culture from city life to rural America. This part of the country is beautiful, rich with history and steeped with a richness of Southern tradition. We miss our beloved Colorado- and embracing change takes time. But we are looking forward to meeting new friends, discovering new favorite places to go and exploring the East Coast high and low. After we close on our house I’ll be sharing projects as we update the interior of our home from “straight up 90’s” to a modern colonial aesthetic. I experimented with some functional vignettes in my kitchen this weekend. I wanted something that saved counter space and brought some aesthetic appeal. I was inspired after visiting numerous kitchen vendors while helping my parents embark on a renovation of their own last week. There are so many ways to use trays to group things together for organization and beautiful displays.

I feel that my previous background in social work really helps me tune in to people’s emotional needs and translate that into a design that brings comfort to their surroundings and feeds their soul. In Colorado our winter will last through March and part of April. It starts to feel like Spring will never come! I always feel like bringing some of the outdoors inside, with houseplants and beautiful blooms, helps to make it feel like Spring is within reach! Here are 10 winter houseplants that won’t disappoint!

Drafty Rooms:
Moss Terrarium- does well in a drafty room Jade Plant, Christmas Cactus

Dry, Arid climates:
Fiddle Fig plants, succulents, snake plants, Aloe eVera plants,

Adaptable and do not require direct light:
ZZ plant, Pothos plant,

Blooms:
Cyclamen- blooms Dec through April. Fragrant blooms resembling a heart shaped. Great for Valentine’s Day!
Desert Rose- beautiful blooms,
African Violets, Rosemary- fragrant and easily found at big box stores during the holidays.

Fabric Remnant to Wall Art DIY

I fell in love with this piece of linen fabric and immediately saw a masterpiece of artistry in the block print pattern. I decided to frame it. I purchased a poster frame (yes, that lovely gold frame is actually a poster frame from Target) and used Velcro tabs to adhere the linen fabric to a piece of plain white fabric, then I framed it with the gold frame. What do you think? Can a gorgeous fabric remnant become a beautiful piece of wall art? I think so!

I love design that’s timeless and yet still gives a nod to current trends. I like to mix different styles and fuse them together. I like the way it makes the room feel and draws the eyes to different features in the room. I especially like adding an antique in the mix- something with history or a story of its own. If everything is strictly one design style I think it is much less interesting and somehow not as inviting. What is your design style? Do you like to combine the old with the new?
